Welcome to Mind & Mythos! This blog is still relatively new, so I wanted to provide a brief introduction to what I’m working on here.
Psychology is an incredibly broad field of study, linking disciplines as varied as behavioural genetics and literary theory. For some, the human mind will never be fully captured by even our most sophisticated theories of humanity and society. For others, psychology is pure biology, and our current understanding is only limited by technology and ethical review boards. I think I sit somewhere in between. No doubt some day we’ll get most of the way there - but if we ever do run out of mysteries to solve, we’ll simply create more.
Mind & Mythos is my attempt to bridge the gap (see what I did there?) between these diverse areas of study. I’ve chosen personality psychology as my starting point because, to quote William Revelle, “the study of personality is the last refuge of the generalist in psychology”. It’s the point at which all other areas of psychology converge, and its theorists are developing an excellent framework upon which to hang psychology’s many weird baubles. That said, I don’t intend to limit myself to just personality theory. Mind & Mythos will explore ancient and modern myths, as well as philosophy and the humanities more broadly. Where possible I’ll try to link it all back to the various sciences relevant to human psychology, but I suspect I’ll branch out into some strange areas at times.
My current plan is to publish at least one essay per month, and a personal update on the first Friday of each month. I also do shorter posts on specific topics from time to time as inspiration strikes, so keep an eye out for those.
I’ve provided a guide to my content on my About page, so check there if you’re looking for a good place to start. Enjoy!
